Let it SNOW!

I was sitting in the parking lot of SJ's school on Thursday afternoon waiting for 2:50 to roll around so I could pick her up when my phone rang. From inside the school, a friend of mine that was at her child's program called me and said "JAY! You are not going to believe this!!" --Then she said... "School is cancelled tomorrow because it is going to SNOW!" I was pretty excited to hear that school was closed... but I totally wasn't buying into the whole snow thing.

Sarah Jane was a little disappointed that school was going to be out because she missed her Valentine's Day Party and her music class all for some "snow" that may or may not come.

You see, here in the south it doesn't snow! That's crazy talk. It doesn't even get truly cold...chilly maybe, but not COLD. I only own one jacket... and I only have it because it's cute, not because it's necessary. To the best of my memory, the last time it REALLY snowed in the South, I was 7. Yes... you read that right... SEVEN.

I remember that I was 7 because my Daddy was still alive and we lived in the parsonage on Ridgecrest Drive in Luverne, AL. It was really, really early (around 5 a.m.) and my Momma came into my room and woke me up to show me the snow because she was afraid that it wouldn't last all day. But, It snowed and snowed all day long that day... and I must have played in it for hours! I walked down the street to where a friend lived and built a snowman with her family, I made snow angels with my brothers, and we even talked my Mom into making SNOW CREAM. ---And until today - I hadn't thought about that snow in years.

SO, when they said snow here --- I laughed to myself and thought, yeah-- I'll believe it when I see it. And then there it was... around 10:00 this morning it started, but it wasn't sticking to the ground. A little piece of me was hoping that my skepticism would be disproved. I had lunch plans with some friends and their kids and while we were there, the snow started to pick up a little... but it STILL wasn't sticking. After lunch, we went for a play-date since it was just yucky out and while we were there --- It started STICKING! Immediately George called me and told me he was on his way home from work so he could play in the snow. SO, as soon as SJ got out of the dress up clothes that she was in and back into her regular clothes, we headed back to the house.

When we finally made it home (after riding behind car after car that acted like they had never driven on a wet road) George was waiting for us in the driveway. We spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying the day... the snow continued to stick to the ground and we enjoyed every minute of it!

Here are a few pictures from our fun day!

I hope that in years to come, SJ will look back on this day with the same fondness that I look back on my childhood snow day - I know that I will forever remember the look on her face, the sound of her laughing, and watching snowflakes fall onto her tongue.
I'm so thankful for this day - and so thankful for these memories.

It's funny you mentioned snow cream! I had never heard of it before but made some this past week in TN with my cousin's kids. It's good :)
